Just Chillin Hot Flash Blend

Caution Sign Isolated On White - Hot Flashes Ahead
Natural aid for Hot Flashes
Hot flashes is what we call it when it feels like your body’s thermostat has gone haywire. A sudden feeling of intense heat from within surges  through your body, especially around the head, neck, and chest. Your skin is warm and may even become reddened by the heat. Profuse sweating is often an uncomfortable by-product, followed by feeling chilled when the hot flash passes. A temporary increase in heart rate is not unusual. Other symptoms during hot flashes may include nausea, dizziness, anxiety, headache, and overall feeling of weakness.

The likely cause of hot flashes is the body’s hormonal changes occurring as a woman goes through menopause.  The frequency and intensity of hot flashes varies with each individual, as will the length of time over which she will experience them, whether months or years.  There are other known triggers that will bring on hot flashes and they can also be experienced by men. Certain medications, eating spicy foods, and alcohol consumption have been known to cause hot flashes.  Smoking, obesity, lack of physical exercise (being a couch potato), and stress, will increase your risk.  In fact, not all women do get hot flashes. Studies show that African-American women report hot flashes more often that those of European descent, and it is even less common amongst Chinese and Japanese women than in white European women. Although we can’t control our heritage, we can be mindful of what we eat, participate in some form of daily exercise, and alter our smoking and alcohol-drinking activity, in order to reduce the effects, and hopefully, the frequency of this uncomfortable curse.

What does this blend do?

Although there is no cure for hot flashes, we can attempt to lesson or minimize them.
  • Myrrh is used as the base note for this blend because it is a circulatory stimulant and has  anti-hyperthyroid properties. The thyroid assists the hypothalamus in regulating the body’s internal temperature.
  • Niaouli is the middle note. It has estrogen-like properties, and will help regulate the effects on the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and ovaries by promoting hormonal secretions. Niaouli essential oil stimulates the circulatory, lymphatic, and endocrine systems, and naturally helps to lower body temperature.
  • Clary Sage essential oil is used for the top note. Like the other essential oils in this blend it helps with blood circulation. Considered a mild hypotensive, it can decrease the heart rate and blood pressure. Clary Sage essential oil is one of the few oils, and certainly one of the more common essential oils that contains diterpenes and diterpene alcohols. Diterpenes have a structure similar to human hormones, which is why Clary Sage can have a balancing effect on hormones and the endocrine system overall.

Safety/Precautions

Niaouli and Clary Sage essential oils are considered non-toxic, non-sensitizing. Myrrh essential oil has the potential for toxicity if used in high dosages. This blend will be used in a roll-on with a carrier oil and will have a low dilution ratio, so this should not be an issue.
The important thing to note here is that all three of these essential oils should be avoided if pregnant or trying to become pregnant, which is especially so with the Niaouli and Clary Sage oils because of their estrogen-like property and behavior. Because the intended use of this blend is to allay an uncomfortable symptom that accompanies menopause, which is the end of the child-bearing capabilities of a woman, it is not intended for use by anyone pregnant or trying to become so.
One reason for putting this blend into a roll-on is to safeguard against the possibility of others in the household being affected by the estrogen-like activity, such as might be possible if used in a diffuser or put into a spray.
If you are undergoing estrogen replacement therapy, or have or are being treated for estrogen-related cancer, you should consult your attending physician before using this blend.
This blend should not be used with young children or the elderly. Keep all essential oils out of the reach of children.

Usage Instructions

This roll-on blend can be used as needed when experiencing a hot flash, or as a preventative measure to reduce the frequency and intensity of expected hot flash attacks. Suggested application sites are the temples, forehead, behind the ears, on the nape of the neck, and on the upper chest.

Thoughts

If there is no others in the household that would be subject to the safety precautions, this is an excellent blend to use in the diffuser before bed. The actual number of drops for each oil will be determined by the type of diffuser you use but should follow the 1 drop of base note -2 drops of middle note -3 drops of top note blending ratio method.
Other common essential oils used for hormonal imbalance include SandalwoodYlang YlangChamomileGeraniumHyssopBergamotOrange, and Marjoram. Always remember to check the safety precautions of any oils you want to change to.
